Fashion Designer Marc Jacobs Is Getting Sued By The Band Nirvana

In 1992, Marc Jacobs was 29 years old designer for the American sportswear label Perry Ellis. He seemed unable to find a clear vision for the brand, or for himself. One runway show changed his life.

His 1993 spring “grunge” collection referenced the music scene that had sprung up in the US Pacific Northwest. Critics hated the plaid shirts, striped knits, and floral maxi dresses, accessorized with beanies and Converse sneakers that looked like it came from a thrift store. Perry Ellis let Jacobs go soon after. Oddly, the show elevated his career.

Last November reissued the collection under his own label with the use of Nirvana's "Smiley Face” logo drawn by Kurt Cobain.

This has landed him at the receiving end of a lawsuit.

On Dec. 28, 2018, Nirvana filed a complaint in a California court accusing the Marc Jacobs brand of copyright infringement.
The suit concerns a graphic in the reissued grunge collection with a strong resemblance to the Smiley face logo that was trademarked some time around 1992.

Former Guns N’ Roses manager Doug Goldstein shared some new details of the argument Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain had back in 1992 at the MTV VMA Awards.

“Look, Axl loved Kurt and wasn’t necessarily a big fan of Courtney. So me, Axl, and Stephanie Seymour are walking across the area where everybody is sitting and eating, and you hear is, ‘Oh look it’s Asshole Rose and his supermodel girlfriend!’ It was Courtney. Axl just went over and told Kurt, ‘Look, shut up your girlfriend or I’ll knock you out.’ None of the band members of Nirvana said anything until they walked out onstage, and Krist Novoselic is trying to make himself look like a tough guy. Really Kurt, where were you? You never came to our dressing room? If you have that much of a problem dude, bring it up.”

Kurt Cobain's Daughter Gets a Restraining Order Against A Former Associate Of Brittany Spears.

Frances Bean Cobain  and her mother, Courtney Love, have been granted a five year restraining order against Sam Lutfi, the judge noting that Lutfi "seems to prey on people".

The judge made the order for five years instead of the usual three against the former associate of Brittany Spears. He even recognized Lutfi from his days with Spears and remarked,

“Why do people get involved with someone like that?"

Lufti served as Spears’ manager during the mid-2000's when Spears famously melted down and was hospitalized on several occasions.

He later sued Spears and her family for defamation, settling the lawsuit years later.

Courtney Love's attorney commented,

“The escalating verbal harassment and threats of Sam Lutfi left no choice for Courtney and her family but to seek protection. The Cobains are grateful for the anti-harassment order issued by the Los Angeles Superior Court against Mr. Lutfi and the powers it provides law enforcement to assure that Mr. Lutfi terminates all contact with the family.”

Did you know that Frances Bean Cobain’s ex-husband Isaiah Silva is suing Courtney Love and Sam Lufti for allegedly trying to have him murdered to get back Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged guitar?

The guitar was supposedly a gift to Isaiah from Frances.

Isaiah claims that in the early hours of June 3, 2016, Sam Lutfi, along with 2 other guys burglarized, robbed, assaulted, sexually battered, kidnapped and attempted to murder him at his West Hollywood Home.

Isaiah also claim that his mother was injured in the attack.

He is also suing John Nazarian, actor Ross Butler and musician Michael Schenk, claiming they were also involved.

Isaiah says that they made their way inside his house by pounding on the front door and yelling, 

"Police, open up!!!” and “LAPD, open the f******* door!!!”

He also alleges that Lutfi grabbed Isaiah's genitals through his pants, moved to within inches of his face and whispered,

 “Listen fa***t, calm the f*** down or we’ll drag you upstairs and take turns f****** you.”

This is not going to be a story about Kurt Cobain. This is just facts, opinions and questions about the time leading up to and after his death. Also about the flawed investigation and why no one has or ever will get the story of his death accurate.

No matter what happened in Kurt's infamous and frustrating past, people and circumstances can change. People can misdirect, alluding from the truth.

We are not going to go back to the begining, to his childhood. That would be useless, a waste of time and energy. We are going to start with facts and then maybe build something out of that.

For now we don't care who discovered his body. That person could have planted or disruppeted things with in the scene. We will get to that later. We need to push all of that, and the doubts and questions we have about everything, out of our minds if we are going to do this right. i know we can't get the official autopsy report, even though it is illegal for that to be with held from the public with a little thing called "The Freedom of Information Act". i digress..

His death certificate.

I'm by no means a professional in any criminal justice department. This are just things as a semi normal person i see. There are a few things i want to point out about this document.

A. A perforating shot gun wound to the head.
B. (mouth).

No exit wound. So the pellets from the shotgun blast remained inside the head. This was a "penetrating" shot, it did not exit.

So, supposedly  there was no blood or tissue "splatter" typical in most shotgun blasts to the head.

There was a pool of blood on the floor from seepage, and damage inside the mouth could be observed, thus the police report indicates, "Obvious trauma to his head."

All right. Let's talk about Kurt gripping the shot gun. That action is called a Cadaveric spasm. It is a spasm after death and can last through rigor mortis(when the body stiffens). This is a fact that means, Kurt was holding onto the shot gun when he died. Now this doesn't mean he pulled the trigger. It also doesn't mean that he didn't either, but he was holding onto the barrel  when he died. You can't fake a cadaveric spasm as far as i am aware of.

The position of the gun. The shot gun was inverted with the trigger and the magazine trap door pointing up. The barrel end is just above his belt line. There is a spend 20 gauge shell casing on top of his jacket. This is to the left of of under a garden tray. The Case Investigation Report stated that the gun probably pivoted when fired. That is why it is in a such a weird position. However, that is just their opinion.

 I have yet to find the receipt, supposedly found and documented in The Case Investigation Report, for the purchase of the ammunition from the "Seattle Guns" store dated 4/2/1994.

The shot gun was purchased by Kurt's friend Dylan on March 30, 1994.

Kurt supposedly gave Dylan, so Dylan could by the gun. According to the police report, Kurt was afraid that he wouldn't be able to get a gun or it would be confiscated.

The shot gun had no usable prints. Could this be because the gun was not checked for fingerprints until May 6, 1994???? That is almost a month after he is found dead.

And now the drugs.The Case Investigation Report stated that there "was evidence of parenteral drug use, including needle tracks and fresh puncture wounds." Parenteral just means it wasn't ingested. "Wounds". So how many times did he shoot up? 

His morphine level was 1.52 mg.(miligrams per liter of blood). So what does that mean? First of all that is a very high level, even for someone who has built up a high tolerance. It also doesn't mean that is how much he shot up with. It just means that is what is left. Cobain would have had to inject as much as 225 to 240 mgs of heroin to reach a blood morphine level of 1.52 mg. It is hard to understand this, because here is no such thing as a "blood heroin level" because heroin is transformed into morphine when it enters the blood.

It is triple the leathal dose. Heroin effects you imediatly. And if all that hit him imediatly, how did he put his kit away so neatly before shooting himself? How did he kill himself without assistance?

He also had valum in his system. 

The suicide note.

Kurt's mother thinks he wrote the note. Some experts say he wrote the whole thing. Some experts say he didn't write the last part. Also, some people think it doesn't sound like a suicide note.

The pen that was used to write it was stabbed through the note. I did not have any usable fingerprints.

There was also a second note that Courtney supposedly found under her pillow. Supposedly it stated that he didn't want her to follow him and he was sorry. She didn't tell anyone about the second note until 7 months later when it "accidently" slipped out durring an interview.

This was found on the stairs in his home. Supposedly Courtney had the "nanny" write it and leave it for Kurt.

This is one of the last autographs he signed. 

Why did he write April 5, on it. That is not the date he signed it. Did he know when he was going to die?

Kurt's body was creamated. 

Courtney had the gun melted down.

When they checked Kurt's wallet, one of his credit cards was missing. The police checked the statements and found out someone was using his card after he died. They stopped using it after the body was found.

Kurt and his stomach problems. Kurt had Crohns disease. It much more than a stomach problem. It messes you up. It can be so debilitating. It can give you depression as well as making your body hurt, among the stomach issues.

He finally found medicine that worked. And was symptom free after 6 grueling years.

Kurt and Courtney were getting a divorce.

Kurt wanted out of the marriage and was afraid of Courtney.

Courtney knew he wanted a divorce and she said she wanted the "meanest, most vicious divorce lawyer" she could find.

Courtney threaten to take away Frances Bean if Kurt didn't go to rehab and get help.

Kurt did not barricade himself in the room he died in. That was false information.

Suicide attempt in Rome.

On March 3, 1994, Cobain was in a coma in a hospital in Rome. Supposedly he broke up pills of Rohypnol and put them in champagne. Courtney said it was a suicide attempt. Kurt didn't usually take Rohypnol. His drug of choice was heroin.

Dr. Osvaldo Galletta, who treated Cobain after the incident was quoted as saying "We can usually tell a suicide attempt. This didn't look like one to me."

He also specifically denied Love's claim that 50 Rohypnol pills were removed from Cobain's stomach.

The private investigator Courtney had hired to find Kurt, when he went missing before his death, said Kurt's attorney contacted him after Kurt died. She pressed him to investigate Cobain's death, and that Cobain was not suicidal. The attorney also claims that Cobain had asked her to draw up a will excluding Love because he was planning to file for divorce. The attorney also provided the detective with a handwriting practice note that she found in Love's backpack that was left at her home. It has been suggested that the handwriting on this practice note is markedly similar to the handwriting found on the last four lines of Cobain's suicide note.

The guy that said he was offered 50,000 to kill Kurt by Courtney and turned her down.

Eldon Hoke nicknamed El Duce. He was best known as the drummer and lead singer of the shock 

rock band The Mentors.

On December 1993, Courtney approached Eldon, outside The Rock Shop (a Hollywood record store).  The following conversation is alleged to have taken place:

C Love: "El, I need a favor of you. My old man's been a real asshole lately, I need you to blow his fucking head off."

El Duce: "Are you serious"?

C Love: "Yeah, I'll give you $50,000 to blow his fucking head off."

El Duce: "I'm serious if you are".

CLove: "Where can I reach you"?

El Duce: "You can reach me here"

They then went inside to discuss the matter more privatly.

Shop owner Karush Sepedjian said he overheard Love saying, "Can you handle doing this? Can you get this done? What do you want for it"? 

Eldon would later tell Sepedjian that Courtney  offered him $50,000 and a blow job on the spot, which he turned down.  Hoke gave Love a business card and she left.  For his part, Eldon brushed it off .

Sepedjian received a call nn March of 1994 from Love asking for El Duce. He informed Courtney that the band was on tour. She started screaming.

""That son of a bitch, we made an agreement. What am I going to do"? Karush told her " "I don't know, I've got a business to run. Goodbye."

Love did not call back and Sepedjian did not relay the message to Eldon Hoke.

A few years later, after Kurt died, Eldon did an interview for a documentary. After the interview he took a polygraph.

When asked "Did Courtney Love ask you to kill Kurt Cobain?" his respond fell into the category of "beyond possibility of deception".

When asked "Were you offered $50k by Courtney Love to kill Kurt Cobain?" the result was nearly the same.

Eldon stated that although  he wasn't interested in the offer,  he had passed the information on to an associate named Alan.

On April 17, 1997, Eldon went to  Drew Gallaghe house to aquire a fake id. When Drew asked Eldon why he needed it, Eldon supposedly said. " "People get buried in cornfields, people get lost in swamps". When Drew asked Eldon what he ment by that,  Eldon hinted that he may have killed Kurt Cobain.

Following evening, after his final performance on  April 18, 1997 at Al's Bar in Los Angeles, he showed up in the company of a man he claimed to have met that day. 

It was just one week had passed since his interview and Eldon was exhibiting signs of extreme paranoia.

Eldon and the man left and Eldon was never seen alive again.

The following day, Eldon's mangled body was discovered on the railroad tracks in Riverside, Ca.

Eldon had either  fallen asleep on the tracks, drunkenly stumbled or been pushed in front of an oncoming train. 

Tom Grant, the detective that Courtney hired to find Kurt when he went missing. He thinks that Courtney had Kurt killed. He suggests that the heroin was used to incapacitate Cobain before the final shotgun blast was administered by the perpetrator.

Two weeks before his suicide, a police report detailed how officers had been called to his Seattle home after Cobain had locked himself in his bathroom and threatened to kill himself. The report said that at the time, police were told 'he had a gun in the room.'

The officers confiscated that gun and three others, along with a bottle of various unidentified pills. 

Later that night, Cobain told them that he hadn't actually been planning to take his own life. He said that he just wanted to get away from Courtney.

Kurt's friend, Michael Stipe, from R.E.M. said "In the last few weeks, I was talking to Kurt a lot," Stipe said in a statement. "We had a musical project in the works, but nothing was recorded."

Kurt was all set to record a sample album with Stipe, but called at the last minute and canceled. This was the day he went into rehab before his death.

According to one of Cobain's visitors at the clinic, "I was ready to see him look like shit and depressed. He looked so fucking great. He walked out an hour later." At 7:25 p.m.

Cobain told the clinic staff he was stepping out onto the patio for a smoke and "jumped over the fence." 

Michael DeWitt was Courtney and Kurt's live in nanny. Originally told the the police, Kurt came into his room at circa 6:00 AM, sat on his bed and awoke him and his girlfriend, Jessica Hopper, who was spending the night. Kurt and Michael DeWitt talked for a few minutes and Michael DeWitt told Kurt to call Courtney. Michael DeWitt admitted he called Courtney later in the day to tell her that Kurt was at the house. Michael DeWitt's story would later change. 

According to the police report, Michael “Cali” Dewitt, a live-in nanny who was also a drug addict at the time, was transported by taxi from the Cobain home to the airport on Thursday, April 7, the day prior to the discovery of Mr. Cobain's body, whereupon Dewitt flew to Los Angeles. 

Love later had DeWitt’s father do extensive renovations to her home and got ‘Cali’ a lucrative job with Geffen Records.

Whatever we believe, it won't change the fact that Kurt Cobain died. And all the glorious music he would have made went with him. 

Whatever happened, i believe he was a troubled soul. I think he was trying to get better. i believe he wanted to distance himself from Courtney. i think he thought that would help him to get his life on a better track. How can you distance yourself from someone you had a child with, unless you didn't want your child in your life. And i think he did want Frances in his life. i think he adored her.

i believe he couldn't have committed his suicide by himself by looking at the evidence. 

Whether it was his idea or someone else, i believe he had help. Either he was lead down that path from his circumstances or someone shoved the gun in his mouth. Someone had to have put his kit neatly away. 

And why wasn't there fingerprints found on the note? 

i do believe he was holding onto the barrel of the gun when it went off. i'm not sure if he is the one that pulled the trigger or not. i'm also not sure if he is the one that shot himself up with the drugs or not.

Michael Dewitt and Courtney, knew about the room over the garage and didn't bother to tell anyone he might be there? At least, not until after he was dead. And the person that found him wasn't a police officer or the P.I. that Courtney hired, it was an electrician that just happened to climb up there?

Did Courtney and Dewitt already know Kurt was dead?

Did they kill him? 

Did Dewitt find him deceased and under the direction of Courtney shoot him with the drugs, after he killed himself, so the plublicty around his death would grow into this monster that would never go away?

Sadly, I don't think we'll ever know the truth.

What did Kurt's friends and family think of his death?

Even though many of Kurt's friends accepted the suicide conclusion to the story of his life It still came as a shock.

Mark Lanegan, a long-time friend of Cobain's, told Rolling Stone: "I never knew (Cobain) to be suicidal. I just knew he was going through a tough time."

In August 2005, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon was asked about Cobain's motive of suicide, in an interview for Uncut Magazine. "I don't even know that he killed himself. There are people close to him who don't think that he did ..."

When asked if she thought someone else had killed him, Gordon answered, "I do, yes."

A musical hero of Cobain's, Greg Sage, said about him in an interview:

"Well, I can't really speculate other than what he said to me, which was, he wasn't at all happy about it, success to him seemed like, I think, a brick wall. There was nowhere else to go but down, it was too artificial for him, and he wasn't an artificial person at all. He was actually, two weeks after he died, he was supposed to come here and he wanted to record a bunch of Leadbelly covers. It was kind of in secret, because, I mean, people would definitely not allow him to do that. You also have to wonder, he was a billion-dollar industry at the time, and if the industry had any idea at all of him wishing or wanting to get out, they couldn't have allowed that, you know, in life, because if he was just to get out of the scene, he'd be totally forgotten, but if he was to die, he'd be immortalized."

Cobain's grandfather, Leland Cobain, publicly said that he believes Cobain "was murdered" and not the victim of suicide.

I wish I hadn't listened to other people, but I did. … And I have to go now. Just tell him he's a f*cker, OK? Just say 'f*cker." "You're a f*cker." And that you love him."

Cobain, was uncomfortable with the label, believing his message and artistic vision had been misinterpreted by the public.

His personal problems were often subject to media attention.

He struggled with heroin addiction, chronic health problems and depression.

He also had difficulty coping with his fame and public image.

He had professional and personal pressures surrounding himself and his wife, musician Courtney Love.

Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle on April 8, 1994.

His death was ruled a suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

His death at age 27, and the circumstances have become a topic of public fascination and debate.

Nirvana, with Cobain as a songwriter, has sold over 25 million albums in the U.S., and over 75 million worldwide. 

Cobain was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 along with his band and band mates Dave Grohl and Novoselic

They were inducted by a close friend of Cobain, the front man of American alternative rock band R.E.M., Michael Stipe.

Early Life

The son of waitress Wendy Elizabeth and  automotive mechanic Donald Leland Cobain.

His younger sister, Kimberly, was born on April 24, 1970.

Kurt was described as being a happy and excitable child.

He was caring and loving.

He would draw his favorite characters from films and cartoons, such as the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Donald Duck, in his bedroom.

According to his aunt Mari, he began singing at the age of two.

He started playing the piano and singing, writing a song at the age of four. 

He listened to artists like the Ramones and Electric Light Orchestra.

When he was nine years old, his parents divorced.

He later said that the divorce had a profound effect on his life.

Cobain became defiant and withdrawn.

"I remember feeling ashamed, for some reason. I was ashamed of my parents. I couldn't face some of my friends at school anymore, because I desperately wanted to have the classic, you know, typical family. Mother, father. I wanted that security, so I resented my parents for quite a few years because of that." Kurt said from a 1993 interview.

After meeting Jenny Westeby, Kurt Cobain's father remarried to Kurt's dismay.

Cobain liked Westeby at first, but after she gave birth to a boy, he began resenting her.

Cobain's mother began dating a man who was abusive.

Cobain witnessed the domestic violence against his mom when her boyfriend sent her to the hospital with a broken arm.

His mom wouldn't press charges and stayed commited to the relationship.

Cobain began bullying another boy at school.

These behaviors eventually caused his father to take him to a therapist that concluded that he would benefit from a single family environment.

Cobain's mother granted full custody to his father on June 28, 1979.

His first drug experience was with marijuana in 1980, at age 13.

On Cobain's 14th birthday, his uncle bought him a guitar.

Despite Kurt being right handed, he played the guitar left handed.

Soon, Kurt's dad couldn't handle him anymore.

Kurt's dad  placed his son in the care of family and friends.

He became a devout Christian and regularly attended church services, while living with the born-again Christian family of his friend Jesse Reed.

Later, engaging in what was described as "anti-God" rants, he renounced Christianity.

The song "Lithium" is about his experience while living with the Reed family.

Religion remained an important part of his personal life and beliefs.

Even thought he was uninterested in sports, his father signed him up for jr. high wrestling.

He was a skilled wrestler.

Despised the experience because of the ridicule he endured from his teammates and coach.

He allowed himself to be pinned in an attempt to sadden his father.

Later, his father enlisted him in a Little League Baseball team.

Cobain would intentionally strike out to avoid playing.

When he befriended a homosexual student at school, he suffered bullying from heterosexual students who concluded that he was gay.

In an interview Kurt stated ""I started being really proud of the fact that I was gay even though I wasn't".

In a 1993 interview with The Advocate, Cobain claimed that he was "gay in spirit" and "probably could be bisexual".

He also stated that he used to spray paint "God Is Gay" on pickup trucks.

Police records show that Cobain was arrested for spray painting the phrase "ain't got no how watchamacallit" on other vehicles.

In one of his journals it reads  "I am not gay, although I wish I were, just to piss off homophobes".

Cobain often drew during school classes.

Cobain drew Michael Jackson for a caracture assginment.

He was told by the teacher that the image was inappropriate for a school hallway.

He then drew then-President Ronald Reagan that was seen as "unflattering.

The first concert he attended was the Melvins.

Cobain eventually found escape through the thriving Pacific Northwest punk scene, going to punk rock shows in Seattle.

Cobain began living with his mother during his second year of high school.

He dropped out upon realizing that he did not have enough credits to graduate. 

His mother told him that he needed to find employment or leave.

Cobain found his belongings boxed up after a week.

Cobain stayed with friends, occasionally sneaking back into his mother's basement.

He also he lived under a bridge.

An experience that inspired the song "Something in the Way".

Throughout most of his life, Cobain suffered from chronic bronchitis and intense physical pain due to an undiagnosed chronic stomach condition.

He regularly used the drug during adulthood.

When Kurt Cobain was 18,  he formed the band  called Fecal Matter, with Dale Crover of The Melvins, with Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins joining later.

Paying his rent by working at The Polynesian Resort, in late 1986 he moved into an apartment.

He was traveling frequently to Olympia, Washington, to go to rock concerts, where he formed a relationship with Tracy Marander.

She supported the couple by working in a cafeteria and stealing food.

Her insistence that he get a job caused arguments that influenced Cobain to write "About a Girl".

Marander is credited with having taken the cover photo for the album.

Cobain split from Maradner and began dating musician Toby Vail.

After intially meeting Toby, Cobain vomited out of anxiety.

This event inspired the lyric "love you so much it makes me sick".

Which he put in the song "Anyerisum"

In 1990, they collaborated on a musical project called Bathtub is Real, in which they both sang and played guitar and drums.

Cobain's relationship with Vail inspired the lyrics of many of the songs on Nevermind.

A member of Bikini Kill, Hanna spray-painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on Cobain's apartment wall.

Cobain, unaware of the deodorant's existence, interpreted the slogan as having a revolutionary meaning, and it inspired the title of the Nirvana song "Smells Like Teen Spirit.

While hanging out at the Melvins' practice space, he met Novoselic.

After months of asking, Novoselic finally agreed to join Cobain, forming the beginnings of Nirvana.

The band name "Nirvana" was taken from the Buddhist concept, which Cobain described as "freedom from pain, suffering and the external world".

Eventually, the band settled on Chad Channing as the drummer.

He was the drummer for the album "Bleach".

Cobain became dissatisfied with Channing's style, leading the band to find a new drummer.

They eventually settled on David Grohl.

Love and Cobain met on January 12, 1990, in Portland's Satyricon nightclub.

The band found their greatest success through their 1991 major-label debut, Nevermind.

A few days after the conclusion of Nirvana's "Pacific Rim" tour, Cobain and Love were married on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii on February 24, 1992.

A sonogram of the couple's as-yet-unborn baby was included in the artwork for Nirvana's single, "Lithium".

The couple's daughter Frances Bean Cobain was born August 18, 1992.

Kurt was publicly proud that Nirvana had played at a gay rights benefit, supporting No-on-Nine, in Oregon in 1992.

He was a vocal supporter of the pro-choice movement and Nirvana was involved in L7's Rock for Choice campaign.

He received death threats from a small number of anti-abortion activists for participating in the pro-choice campaign.

After attaining mainstream success, Cobain became a devoted champion of lesser known indie bands.

Cobain even invited his favorite musicians to perform with him.

Ex-Germs guitarist Pat Smear joined the band in 1993.

The Meat Puppets appeared onstage during Nirvana's 1993 MTV Unplugged appearance.

Nirvana's Unplugged set also included renditions of "The Man Who Sold the World", by British rock musician David Bowie.

Nirvana's acoustic Unplugged set, was released posthumously as an album in 1994.

Cobain and his  friend, R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe, were going to record a trial run album, a demo tape.

At the last minute Kurt called and said, 'I can't come'.

Stipe was chosen as the godfather of Cobain and Courtney Love's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

Cobain believed that music comes first and lyrics second.

Cobain would describe his lyrics himself as "a big pile of contradictions".

"They're split down the middle between very sincere opinions that I have and sarcastic opinions and feelings that I have and sarcastic and hopeful, humorous rebuttals toward cliché bohemian ideals that have been exhausted for years".

Cobain originally wanted Nevermind to be divided into two sides: a "Boy" side, for the songs written about the experiences of his early life and childhood, and a "Girl" side, for the songs written about his dysfunctional relationship with Vail.

On the album "In Utero" he dealt with his parents' divorce.

He delt with his newfound fame and the public image and perception of himself and Courtney Love on "Serve the Servants".

And he delt with his enamored relationship with Love conveyed through lyrical themes of pregnancy and the female anatomy on "Heart-Shaped Box".

He wrote "Rape Me" not only as an objective discussion of rape, but a metaphorical protest against his treatment by the media.

He wrote about fame, drug addiction and abortion on "Pennyroyal Tea".

Women's rights and the life of Seattle-born Farmer on "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle".

After reading a newspaper story of an incident in 1987, where a 14-year-old girl was kidnapped after attending a punk rock show then raped and tortured with a blowtorch, Cobain was affected enough to write the song "Polly" from Nevermind.

Bob Dylan cited "Polly" as the best of Nirvana's songs, and said of Cobain, "the kid has heart".

Cobain to write the song "Scentless Apprentice" from In Utero after the Patrick Süskind's novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.

Many of Cobain's paintings, collages, and sculptures appeared in the artwork of Nirvana's albums, such as the covers of Incesticide and In Utero.

Cobain contributed backing guitar for a spoken word recording of beat poet William S. Burroughs' entitled "The "Priest" They Called Him"

According to The Telegraph, Cobain had depression.

His cousin brought attention to the family history of suicide, mental illness and alcoholism, noting two of her uncles who had committed suicide with guns.

He used heroin sporadically for several years, but, by the end of 1990, his use developed into a full-fledged addiction.

He was trying to treat his stomach conditon by self medicating.

"It started with three days in a row of doing heroin and I don't have a stomach pain. That was such a relief".

In 1993, Kurt overdosed on heroin and still performed later that night as if nothing had happened.

On March 1, 1994, Cobain was diagnosed with bronchitis and severe laryngitis, following a tour stop at Terminal Eins in Munich, Germany.

He flew to Rome the next day for medical treatment.

He was joined there by his wife, Courtney Love, on March 3, 1994.

The next morning, Love awoke to find that Cobain had overdosed on a combination of champagne and Rohypnol.

Cobain was immediately rushed to hospital, and spent the rest of the day unconscious.

After five days in the hospital, Cobain was released and returned to Seattle.

Love phoned the Seattle police informing them that Cobain was suicidal and had locked himself in a room with a gun, on March 18, 1994.

He was not suicidal and had locked himself in the room to hide from Love.

Love arranged an intervention regarding Cobain's drug use on March 25, 1994.

By the end of the day, Cobain had agreed to undergo a detox program.

Cobain arrived at the Exodus Recovery Center in Los Angeles on March 30, 1994.

The staff were unaware of Cobain's history of depression and prior attempts at suicide.

There was no indication to them that Cobain was in any negative or suicidal state of mind.

He spent the day talking to counselors about his drug abuse and personal problems, happily playing with his daughter Frances. These interactions were the last time Cobain saw his daughter.

The following night, Cobain walked outside to have a cigarette, and climbed over a six-foot-high fence to leave the facility.

He took a taxi to Los Angeles Airport and flew back to Seattle.

Most of his close friends and family were unaware of his whereabouts.

 On April 2 and 3, Cobain was spotted in numerous locations around Seattle.  

Love contacted private investigator Tom Grant, on April 3.

On April 7, amid rumors of Nirvana breaking up, the band pulled out of the 1994 Lollapalooza music festival.

Cobain's body was discovered  on April 8, at his Lake Washington Boulevard home by electrician Gary Smith.

Apart from a minor amount of blood coming out of Cobain's ear, the electrician reported seeing no visible signs of trauma.

A note was found, addressed to Cobain's childhood imaginary friend Boddah.

A high concentration of heroin and traces of diazepam were also found in his body.

The coroner's report estimated Cobain to have died on April 5, 1994.

A public vigil was held for Cobain on April 10, 1994, at a park at Seattle Center drawing approximately seven thousand mourners.

Grohl said that the news of Cobain's death was:

... probably the worst thing that has happened to me in my life. I remember the day after that I woke up and I was heartbroken that he was gone. I just felt like, "Okay, so I get to wake up today and have another day and he doesn't."

A final ceremony was arranged for Cobain, by his mother, on May 31, 1999, and was attended by both Love and Tracy Marander. As a Buddhist monk chanted, daughter Frances Bean scattered Cobain's ashes into McLane Creek in Olympia, the city where he "had found his true artistic muse"

In 2003, David Fricke of Rolling Stone ranked him the 12th greatest guitarist of all time.

He was later ranked the 73rd greatest guitarist and 45th greatest singer of all time by the same magazine.

MTV rateed him as seventh in the "22 Greatest Voices in Music".

The Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee, a non-profit organization was created in May 2004 to honor Cobain.

A sign was put up in Aberdeen, Washington, that read "Welcome to Aberdeen – Come As You Are" as a tribute to Cobain, in 2005.

He was placed at number twenty by Hit Parader on their list of the "100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time" in 2006.

Controversy erupted in July 2009 when a monument to Cobain in Aberdeen along the Wishkah River included the quote "... Drugs are bad for you. They will fuck you up". 

Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins referred to Cobain as "the Michael Jordan of our generation".
