What Happened to Natalie Wood in the Dark Waters?

🐅Natalie Wood (Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko)🐅
"At night, when the sky is full of stars and the sea is still you get the wonderful sensation that you are floating in space."

Natalie was a star from the moment she as born. She was very kind and friendly. She also loved animals, the color pink and her stuffed tigers.

She was born on July 10th, 1938 in San Francisco, California to Maria and Nikolai Stepanovich Zakharenko. Her parents were immigrants born in Russia.

When Natalie's mother, Maria, was young, before she started a family of her own, civil war had broken out. Maria and her family left Russia, resettling as refugees in the Chinese city of Harbin. There she met and married Alexander Tatuloff. Together they had a daughter, Olga.

Alexander decided that it was time to go to the United States. Maria was advised not to go because she was too thin. So, she and Olga joined him in the United States 10 months later. When they arrived, Alexander confessed that he had taken a mistress to keep him company while he was without Maria.

Alexander then took Maria and Olga to a one room bungalow that he shared with other dock workers. One day, Alexander brought home a Russian immigrant named Nikolai Stepanovich Zakharenko.

Nikolai's father was a chocolate factory worker who joined the anti-Bolshevik civilian forces during the Russian Civil War. His father was killed in 1918 in a street fight between Red and White Russian soldiers. After that, Nikolai's mother and his two brothers fled to their relatives in Montreal. Later, they moved to San Francisco, where Nikolai worked with Alexander.

When Maria saw Nikolai, she found him very attractive. Alexander was still seeing other women, so Maria decided to start up a relationship with Nikolai.

Nikolai had a drinking problem which would bring out his dark side and he frequently would get into fights. Alexander saved him in one of these fights.

Maria for divorced in 1935. She and Olga moved in with Nikolai. Two years later she gave birth to Natalie. Four months after that Maria and Nikolai married.

Nikolai would read to Natalie in English and German. Natalie grew up speaking both languages fluently.
Maria had hopes that Natalie would one day be a famous actress.  And that's what happened.
Shortly after Natalie was born, her family moved to Santa Rosa. Natalie was noticed by members of a crew during a film shoot in downtown Santa Rosa. Her mother soon moved the family to Los Angeles in order to pursue a film career for her daughter.
After Natalie started acting as a child, studio executives at RKO Radio Pictures changed her name to "Natalie Wood", in reference to director Sam Wood. Her original name had been deemed too ethnic....  Little Natalie was upset by this, but she was told she'd learn to like it.

Natalie's younger sister, Svetlana Gurdin, was born in Santa Monica after the move. Now known as Lana Wood, she also became an actress.

Natalie did 18 films as a child. A few weeks before her fifth birthday, she made her film debut in "Happy Land", in 1943.
A movie that was known for was "Miracle on 34th street".
Something you need to know about Natalie.. she was utterly terrified of water. She was afraid to go into swimming pools. She even found it difficult to wash her hair. She would have nightmares of drowning in water. When she was younger she went to a psychic. She told her she'd be a big star one day. She also told her to be weary of dark water. Her mom would always remind her of the psychic's warnings. Her mom was very superstitious.

Her fear of water keep growing. She had another incident with water. She was ten years old. She was on the set of "The Green Promise". There was a bridge that was ridged to collapse for whomever was on it. They'd fall into the water below. To make things worse for Natalie, this was during a thunderstorm. Obviously, Natalie would be terrified of this. Her mom lied to her about the bridge. She said that it wasn't ridged and that it was perfectly safe. She trusted her mom. When she was walking across the bridge, the technician accidentally bumped the switch.
She fell in and broke her wrist. That made her phobia worse. For some reason her mom didn't take her to the doctor. She let it heal on it's own. That incident gave Natalie a permanent scar.

That was not the only time Natalie had been traumatized. She loved animals and pretty much all living creatures. Her mom squished a butterfly in order to help Natalie cry on screen. Her mom also told her to picture the time when her little puppy got hit by car and killed, right in front of her...

Natalie also had her beautiful dark hair bleached blonde for a movie role.

Natalie was never alone. She even had someone go with her to the bathroom. Allegedly, she was never allowed to play outside either. Her mother feared she'd get injured and be unappealing to directors.

As Natalie got older and landed more roles, she said that it was hard to remember who she was. Her parents also started fighting more and their fights became more violent.

By the time Natalie was 11 years old her career started to slow down and she wasn't the cast as the main star in movies anymore. Her father had a heart attack and wasn't able to work for awhile, so Natalie had to take any role she could. Her mother made her dress younger than her age, in order to get roles type case for younger kids. She didn't this in order to make sure Natalie still would get acting jobs, because she was too young to play older parts and to old to be a child star. This is not something that she wanted to do, but Natalie did it anyway.

By now, her mother didn't care as much about Natalie's career. As long as she was bringing home money, that is all that seemed to matter. At least Natalie now got to play outside. Her parents bought her a horse that she named "Powder." Sadly, she would not have Powder very long. Natalie had let Lana sit on the horse and it got spooked and threw the little girl off. Lana lay unconcous in bed for a week, her mother refusing to take her to the doctor. As a result, Natalie sold the horse out of guilt.

Natalie also got to go to public school, something that she hadn't done since she was five years old. She enrolled in Sutter Junior High. She felt really out of place there.

When Natalie was thirteen she developed a crush on a boy from school named Jimmy Williams. Natalie's mother told her she couldn't date and that if she sat on a boys lap she'd get pregnant... She was also told that she couldn't date anyone until she got into high school.

Natalie started to rebel, which upset her mother. But she was starting to land older roles so she let it slide. She also started going to adult parties and was set up by the studio with older actors for publicity. All of this was find with Natalie's mother. Her daughter could date boys as long as they were famous, it didn't matter how old they were.

In the movie "The Star", Natalie played Betty Davis' daughter. During filming, they were on a sailboat at Catalina Island. She was forced to jump into the water. She was terrified. She was told that there'd be men in boats to pull her out. After a little bit of coaxing, she jumped in. She immediately panicked and started flailing around. She was pulled to safety. After seeing how shaken up she was, Betty Davis demanded that they bring in a stunt double for Natalie. The stunt double almost drowned and the seen was cut from the movie.

When Natalie got to high school, she started dating the boy that she had a crush on for years, Jimmy Williams. They fell madly in love. This did not sit well with Natalie's mother. Eventually, her mother put an end to the relationship for good and Jimmy attempted suicide. This left him with permanent brain damage. After all of this happened, Natalie and her mother made a deal, Natalie would keep working only if her mother backed off of her love life.

During the filming of the movie "The Silver Chalice," 15-year-old Natalie met Frank Sinatra. He invited her to a party at his house and after that, the two became good friends.

By the time Natalie was 16 years old, she was only 95 pounds and had developed a drinking problem. She would drink until she passed out. She had a lot of anxiety and hated being alone.

Natalie's first love scene was in a CBS television show called "I am a fool." Her co star was James Dean. They became very close friends. He inspired her to do more serious roles. They both went on to star in "Rebel Without A Cause." During the filming of the movie, she became intimately involved with the film's director, 44-year-old Nicholas Ray.

At the same time Natalie was seeing Ray she was secretly seeing Dennis Hopper.

Allegedly, in the Spring of 1954, actor, producer and director, Kirk Douglas, invited Natalie to his room at the Chateau Marmont for an audition. When she arrived he allegedly raped her violently for hours. He told her that if she mentioned this to anyone, it would be the last thing she'd do. Many of her family, friends and co-workers back up this claim. Kirk was never brought to justice.

One day, Dennis, Natalie and one of her friends, all traveled up Laurel Canyon after dinner and drinks. Dennis parked at Mulholand Drive. That sat gazing at the stars and sipping whiskey. Natalie became ill from drinking too much and the trio headed back home. On their way. they got into a head on collusion and Natalie was thrown from the vehicle. She had been knocked unconscious and taken to the emergency room.

When Natalie was 17 years old, she flew to New York for the premiere of "Rebel Without A Cause." While she was there, she saw the Broadway play "Anastasia." Which is an adaptation of the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who could have escaped the execution of her family. Years later, an amnesiac orphan named Anya hopes to find some trace of her family by siding with two con men who wish to take advantage of her likeness to the Grand Duchess.

This stirred up a lot of emotions in Natalie. She felt a connection to the Anastasia/Anya character. There was many parallels to her life and that of Anastasia/Anya. The play reminded her of her lost childhood. Also, growing up, Natalie's mother also claimed that the were decedents of the Romanov family. During her childhood, Natalie would often stare. at the mural of the Romanov family that was displayed in her room.

It while she was in New York, Natalie got the terrible news that James Dean had died in a car crash. He was ruled at fault for colliding with the other car due to the extremely fast speed he was traveling. However, others that examined the evidence claimed that James hadn't been speeding.

Later, Natalie began filming "A Cry In The Night" with Raymond Burr. (Some of you might remember Burr as the guy who played Perry Mason on the television show called Perry Mason.)

Natalie's character gets abducted by Burr's character and then hides her in a shack in a brickyard. As the police search for her, her character struggles to keep his character at bay.

Natalie and Burr became best friends and spent a lot of time together. Even though Burr was gay, he loved Natalie very much, they just would never have a physical relationship. The Warner Bros studio didn't approve of Natalie's relationship with Burr, so Natalie had to see him in secret.

At the same time, the studio set Natalie up with Tab Hunter in order to promote a movie they were doing together called "Burning Hills." They sent someone to follow Natalie around to make sure she wasn't doing anything they didn't want her to do. This made Natalie angry, so she kept pretending like she was sick during filming of Natalie and Hunter's movie.

Natalie became engaged to Scott Marlowe, a friend of James Dean. This was another relationship frowned upon by the studio and they demanded she end it. Natalie went on with the engagement until she met Elvis Presley. Natalie then ended her relationship with Marlowe. On her 18th birthday, she moved out of her parents house and began spending time with Elvis and his friends.
This brings us to Natalie's husband, Robert Wagner. He is a famous actor. Some of the roles he was famous for included; "With a Song in My Heart, Prince Valiant, White Feather, A Kiss Before Dying, and 1963's The Pink Panther". His more recent claim to fame was "Number 2" in the "Austin Powers" movies. He also guest starred a few times on the t,v, shows "NCIS" and "Three and a half men."
Natalie and Robert met when she was 10 years old and he was 18 years old. They were working in the same studio. She had a crush on him.Where she turned 18, they began dating. They were originally set up by Fox, for publicity. They fell in love. Robert said he fell in love with her on his boat. They were having dinner lit by candle light. He said that is when he fell in love with Natalie.

19-year-old Natalie married 27-year-old Robert on December 28th, 1957 in a small ceremony. They charted a boat for a month long cruise for their honeymoon. During the cruise, a terrible storm hit and Natalie thought she was going to die. They docked in New York City and stayed at the Waldorf before driving back home.
The last week of their honeymoon was spent on Robert's boat off a Catalina Island. Even though she was afraid of water, she felt at ease on his boat and that day became a highly treasured memory of Natalie's.

Natalie became so attached to Robert that she felt like she needed to be with him at all times. She even turned down some big movie roles so she could be with him. This didn't set well with Warner Bros and they put her on an unpaid suspension.

For her 21st birthday, Robert and Frank Sinatra threw her a lavish party. And even though she was at legal drinking age, she would hardly partake in drinking.

Natalie and Robert bought a home in Beverly Hills.

Natalie started seeing a psychotherapist for her identity crisis and he prescribed her various different pills, some of them barbiturates. She was also taking diet pills because she was terrified of gaining weight.

Natalie's sister, Lana, moved in with Natalie and Robert and the two sisters grew extremely close. Natalie cared for Lana as a mother would have.

Robert rented a place in New York for Natalie while she was filming "Splendour In The Grass" with Warren Beatty. At first Natalie and Beatty didn't get along very well, but they made it work. This is when Natalie and Robert's relationship started to turn tumultuous. Robert would often go to the movie set and watch Natalie work and he would allegedly become insanely jealous and thought that she was having an affair with Beatty. Robert later admitted that one night he went to Beatty's house with a gun with the intention of killing him.

There were some tough scenes for Natalie in the movie, but she persevered and did them very well. One of the scenes she had to dunk her head underwater while she was in a bathtub and then jump out completely nude. She pushed passed her fear of water and also the fact that she didn't want to be nude on set. There was another scene that was shot at High Falls in New York. Her character tried to commit suicide by jumping off the ledge and into the water bellow. She was told there was going to be a stunt double doing that part, but she was lied to and tricked into jumping in.

Natalie then was cast as Maria in "West Side Story."  She wasn't a professional singer or dancer, so she took lessons that took up 12 hours each day. Despite all of her hard work, none of her original vocals were used. On top of that, she had throat problems, but didn't tell anyone for a while or see a doctor because she didn't want to be a problem on set. She eventually underwent a tonsillectomy. During the surgery she almost bled out.

Robert's career was going down hill and he carried a lot of resentment towards Natalie.

Natalie and Robert had planned a romantic trip to Italy, but that never happened. Allegedly, Natalie caught Robert having an affair with a man. Natalie then took too many sleeping pills and fell into a coma. And in 1962 they divorced.

Natalie began dating Beatty and Robert went to Europe. Allegedly, Natalie and Beatty's relationship ended when he came on to Lana. However, remained friends after.

Robert married someone else and had a child. This almost broke Natalie's heart. Natalie started drinking heavily once more and some say she was even abusing pills.
Natalie then met talent agent Richard Gregson.  They fell in love and she stepped away from her career. She married Gregson in May of 1969. They had a daughter named Natasha. She was born on September 29th, 1970. This was the happiest moment of her life.

In the summer of 1971, allegedly, Natalie caught Gregson cheating and threw him out. At this time, Robert was engaged to Frank Sinatra's daughter.
Eventually Natalie and Robert found their way back to each other.
She left Gregson for Robert. When she broke the news to her family, her sister, Lana, asked her why. Natalie replied "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't."

Natalie didn't do much work and decided to focus on being a mother. Robert was working all the time on a new tv show, but he was in debt up to his eyeballs. Natalie had to bail him out of his financial trouble.

Natalie and Robert went on a cruise to London. And again they had trouble. One of the worst storms in 100 years hit, but they turned out to be ok.
Natalie divorced Gregson in 1972 and married Robert. Even though Natalie was fearful of water, they were married on a Yacht off Catalina island. She sent him a note on their wedding day that read:
"Dearest, Here is to smooth sailing for us from now on."

It was a simple wedding on a friend's boat. Natalie and Natasha wore matching Gingham dresses. During the ceremony, the boat rock back and fort so hard that it was difficult to stand up. A picnic was held afterwards.

Robert and Natalie had their own daughter together named Courtney. Natalie became pregnant with her in the summer of 1973. She also started acting again. Even though she loved the book "The Great Gatsby" as well as the writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald, she turned down the role of "Daisy" in the upcoming film version. She was pregnant and wanted to spend as much time with her little baby as she could get once she was born.

Courtney was born on March 9th, 1974. Due to the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck, she had to be delivered via emergency C-section.
In 1975, Natalie and Robert bought at 60 foot power boat and named it "Splendour" and named it after the movie that Natalie was in. The dingy attached to it was called "Valiant," which named after a movie Robert had been in.

They spent almost every weekend on the boat.

The day that Natalie drowned, it was Thanksgiving weekend, 1981.
At the time Natalie was working on a movie called "Brain Storm" with star Christopher Walken. In the science fiction film, researchers Walken and Louise Fletcher develop a system that allows the recording and playback of a person's thoughts onto videotape. The project spins dangerously out of control when they begin using the technology to explore intense sexual and near-death experiences. When the military moves to hijack the project for their own nefarious purposes, Walken tries to outwit them with help from his estranged wife, Natalie Wood.

Robert was doing his own project called "Hart to Hart."

Natalie, Robert and Walken decided that they were going to go on a weekend trip together.

Jealousy always played a big roll in their relationship together. Robert always thought she was going to leave him for somebody else. Christopher Walken was a very good looking guy. Natalie and Christopher had become very good friends. Of course Robert would be jealous of this. Robert had also developed a nasty drinking habit that would add fuel to the fire. He was so jealous he flew to the set of the movie to make sure nothing was going on.

11-year-old Natasha panicked when she heard that her mother was going out on the boat. She begged and pleaded for Natalie not to go.

The whole time on the boat, Natalie and Chris were having a good time together. And reportedly Robert was sulking and angry.

That night they docked at Avalon. They went on shore and the three of them drank for hours. Later they came back to the boat. No idea where Chris went. Natalie and Robert started fighting. There was many witness's to this. They were arguing a lot. Surprisingly, by most accounts, it was Natalie whom started the fight. These were witness's on other boats. Supposedly the fight started because Robert wanted to move the boat somewhere else.

Besides Natalie, Robert and Chris, there was someone else on the boat. The boat had a captain.

It as extremely late at night, it was dark and there also was a storm.
Since Natalie was terrified of water, she wanted to keep the boat where it was. She probably was remembering the warnings about dark water. The idea of traveling around on water in a storm was not something she wanted to do.

She got so upset, she wanted to get off the boat and back on the shore. She asked the Captain to take her back to shore.

He took her back to shore. The two of them rented two separate hotel rooms. He stayed up with her and drank that night. She was talking about her issues with Robert.

She had planned to try to get off the island. It was late at night and she couldn't get a flight. Since it was bad weather she just decided to stay in the hotel and leave in the morning.
The next morning she woke up and she was in a better mood. She told the captain she wanted to go back to the boat to see if she could smooth things out. She was going to go make everyone breakfast and hoped she would have no more issues. They went back to the boat.
Later that day she ended up going back to a bar with Chris. Robert and the captain showed up and was really upset. According to witnesses the two of them were having fun without him. They were almost ignoring him at one point. When they all left, they were all drunk. The bar owner called the harbor master. He said something about Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken. They are really drunk and getting on a boat.
They get back on the boat and went into the lounge area called the "salon room". Natalie starting making a pot of tea. Everything seemed to have calmed down.

Years later the captain came forward with this after going along with Robert's story for years. The captain said that Robert randomly got so angry that he picked up a wine bottle smashed it right in front of Chris and Natalie on the coffee table. After that he asked Chris if he was "trying to fuck his wife?" Chris stood up and went to his stateroom. Natalie became really upset and left the room.
Robert followed her. The captain said he could hear them fighting.
He said that they were fighting so loudly that it sounded like someone was being assaulted. The captain went down to the room and knocked on the door. Robert answered the door and told him to go away. He said that the arguing went on to the f deck.

Suddenly, the fighting just stopped. The captain said he went to f deck to see if everything was ok. Robert was just standing there, with his back to the railing. He said that Natalie was missing and asked the captain to go search the boat.

Witnesses from other boats heard them fighting. All the witnesses have the same story. Around midnight witnesses hear a woman scream. They thought that maybe it was the party on another boat.
One of them heart "Help me, please! Please help me!" in a woman's voice, coming from near the stern of the Splendour. Possibly in a dingy. And then they heard a man yelling drunkenly and in a mocking tone, "Ok honey, we'll get you."

The captain looked in Natalie's room and everywhere he could think of. He couldn't find her. He told this to Robert. Robert said that the dingy(life boat) was gone too. Robert said that he was sure she just went to town. That she probably went to the bar or something and not to freak out.

The captain said that he knew Natalie was so deathly afraid of the water, that she wouldn't take that boat by herself. The captain told Robert that they should turn on the search lights. That they should call and say that they have a missing passenger. Robert told the captain no. He opened up a bottle of alcohol and had the captain sit down with him and drink for an hour.
After an hour, the captain pointed out that she still was not back and that they hadn't heard from her. He said that he had to make the call. Robert reluctantly agreed.

Robert knew that she was missing at midnight. The call about her being missing didn't come in until 1:30 a.m. This is so suspicious.
His wife is missing and terrified of water and there is a storm. So he just sits down for over an hour and drinks. Plus, Natalie couldn't swim.

The next day the dingy was found. It oars were secure and the key was in the off position. The dingy was used to help search for Natalie About a mile away from where the dingy was discovered,  Natalie's body was found by a life guard.. The Natalie was found in a heavy coat, a nightgown, and wool socks. This is weird because, i'm not sure she would go out in public like this. Who knows, she might have been so desperate to get away that she didn't care how she looked? This was ruled as an accidental drowning.

The story that was believed was that she wanted to get off the boat.
Maybe she was mad at Robert and wanted to get a break from him.
She untied the dingy, got in and left.

She was terrified of water, it was stormy, dark and all her life. She has been warned about dark water. So she unties the dingy and goes by herself? he never asked the captain to go with or untie the boat for her? The night before he did, so why didn't she ask him now?

When the medical examiner examined Natalie's body, they found fresh bruises that happened before she died. The tox report said that she had had several glasses of wine. I still don't know if that would give her enough courage to get in a boat by herself at night and in a storm no less.

Her family has mixed feelings about that what happened.
Her daughter Natasha, believes that Robert had nothing to do with her death.
She believes in Robert when he said it was an accident. She continued to live with him and he treated her like his own.
Natalie's sister Lana, believes Robert knows more than he is saying.
She says she knows things go bad and she just wants to know the truth.

Robert has a theory. He thinks Natalie went to go tie the dingy closer to the boat. That it was banging against the boat and making too much noise and making it hard for her to sleep. He claims she went onto the swim step to tie the dingy, slipped on moss, fell in the water and died.

Again, why wouldn't she have asked the captain? The inflatable dingy made a loud sound??

Her sister says that there is no way Natalie would have got in the boat, by herself, that late at night, in a storm.
Natalie was buried on a Wednesday, December 3, 1981. There were Frank Sinatra and a lot of other celebrities there. Robert bent down and kissed the casket farewell.
In 2011, that is when the captain came forward and finally told what he said is the truth. The case was reopened.
In 2012, the coroner said that Natalie looked like a victim of an assault. They changed the cause of death to drowning and other undetermined factors. After that, Robert was considered a person of interest. He was the last person seen with her.
There was always a cloud of suspicion surrounding Robert about this case. In February of this year, new witness's came forward.
And now the details of Robert's story don't add up. Robert is refusing to cooperate.

In 2018, a team of forensic investigators and Los Angeles detectives, who had joined forces, wanted to exhume Natalie Wood's body in a bid to learn the truth behind her. mysterious death. Her body has yet to be exhumed. Allegedly, Robert Wagner, a “person of interest” in the case, hired a team of lawyers to crush the exhumation effort.

Hollywood insiders, experts and law-enforcement figures claim that former president and actor Ronald Reagan, helped cover up Robert Wagner's involvement in Natalie Wood's death. They all were guests on podcast “Fatal Voyage: The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood.” Which is a 12-part audio documentary sheds new light on her case.
Author Kathleen McKenna stated,
“They were old friends, they’d been in the studio system together. I very much doubt Ronald Reagan thought he had killed Natalie, he just thought he was grieving and wanted to protect him.”

One of the many things done wrong with Natalie Wood's case was the coroner’s failure to scrape Wood’s fingernails for tissue that could have yielded evidence of a struggle.

Retired trial lawyer Sam Perroni came forward with the contents of a secret addendum to the autopsy report that the medical examiner commissioned from colleague Paul Miller but whose sensational findings were never made public.

Marilyn Wayne came forward saying she received a warning in the days after the actress’ demise to zip her lip or there would be consequences.

She said she had suspicions that it came from a powerful Hollywood star and her being only 19 at the time, it scared her into being quiet.
Christopher Walken has been extremely silent about all of this.
In my opinion, Natalie and Robert got into a fight and she accidentally fell overboard. He thought maybe no one would believe him on account of their violent past, so he lied.

Why has Chris been so silent about all of this? And no one
heard Natalie splash in the water and no one heard the dingy start up.
What do you think happened?
R.I.P. Natalie
