4-foot-8 lanky boy who was independent, really smart and goofy. He was also loving and always wanted to help. He loved trains, cars and he loved being in the water. He was close with his siblings, often talking about video games with his stepbrothers and baking with his stepsister. And he loved to dance.

Roman was born in Wisconsin and primarily lived with his father, Jordan Piper, as his mother, Shelly Lopez recovered from injuries she suffered while serving in Iraq with the U.S. Army.

Roman lived in Placerville, California, in a large household with eight children from three different families. His own last name, Lopez, comes from his biological mother.

On Saturday the 11th, 2020, Roman's step mother, Lindsay Piper, went to 11-year-old Roman's bedroom around 9 a.m. to wake him up for breakfast, but he wasn't there. Lindsay and Roman's father, Jordan, searched his usual hiding spots, but couldn't find him. They then called the Placerville Police Department, who failed to send officers until hours later.

Multiple agencies canvassed the neighborhood in search of the missing boy. That evening his body was found. Police haven't said where Roman's body was found, but it is rumored that he was found at a house at 2892 Coloma St. His death has been ruled as suspicious. A  4-wheel drive, white Chevy pickup truck bearing a license plate out of Indiana, A425538 was on that property was removed the following Monday.

The remaining children in the Piper house were taken into Child Protective Services. Roman’s siblings didn’t learn of his death until days later at a court hearing when they read it in a file given to them by their CPS case worker.

Kira Sutkay, the biological mother of the three youngest children in the Pipers’ care, agreed to an arrangement to have Roman’s guardian, Lindsay Piper, home-school her three young children and take them to doctor’s appointments while they were still living in Michigan. But in late 2019, Sutkay learned that Piper had moved out of the state and had taken the children with her. They have been embroiled in a custody battle ever since.

Roman and his family had moved into the neighborhood a little over a month before he died.

Shelly Lopez, found out about her son's death from a friend that saw an article about Roman's death online. She can't get a hold of Jordan or Lindsay. She plans to travel to Placerville to get answers and to hopefully bring her son’s body home.
