On Friday, November 1st, 2019, Patrick Frazee’s defense attorney and prosecutors presented opening statements.

Frazee’s public defender told the jury that Krystal Jean Lee Kenney was an unreliable liar who spoke to investigators only after securing a plea deal for herself. Kenney was an Idaho nurse with whom Frazee maintained a complicated romantic relationship for more than a decade. She is also the key witness for the prosecution.

It was also pointed out that investigators have never recovered Berreth’s body or the alleged murder weapon, and they never found other witness who saw or heard anything suspicious the day of the alleged murder.

The defense also reminded the court that investigators found an unknown person’s DNA in Berreth’s home and that Kenney’s story doesn’t always match the evidence.

The prosecution pointed at Frazee seated in the courtroom and said, “This is the face of a cold, calculating manipulator. This face, this man, is a killer.”

Cheryl Berreth, Kelsey's mother, became the first witness to testify. She painted a picture of Kelsey as a young, ambitious woman who followed love to Colorado after meeting Patrick Frazee online in 2015.  Cheryl also talked about the last time she spoke Kelsey on Thanksgiving and how she had a normal conversation with Frazee via text, the day he allegedly killed her daughter.

Kelsey Berreth has not been seen since surveillance video captured her entering a Safeway grocery store with the couple's 1-year-old daughter on Thanksgiving, 2018.

Kenney later told investigators that Frazee tied a sweatshirt around Berreth’s face, beat her to death with a baseball bat and burned her body on his Florissant ranch. Kenney traveled more than 700 miles from her Idaho home to help Frazee clean the scene of the crime in Berreth’s home, she told investigators.

As part of the plea deal, Kenney agreed to testify against Frazee at his trial, and her testimony is some of the strongest evidence prosecutors have against Frazee.

Frazee faces two first-degree murder charges, three counts of solicitation to commit murder, one count of tampering with a body and two counts of a crime of violence. If convicted, Frazee faces life in prison.
